The purpose of a parentage action is to determine a child’s legal parents. Frequently, this issues arises when a child is born to unwed parents. This determination is critical, as it impacts who has custody and visitation rights with regards to the child, it impacts whether the child has certain rights under the laws of intestacy, and who has an obligation to help support the child. Said another way, a parentage action will often times involve orders for custody and visitation, as well as child support orders.
In many circumstances, the legal parents of a child are presumed under California law. Other times, however, it will be necessary to go to court and receive a judgment of parentage.
We assist clients in establishing parentage along with the related legal issues. These include child custody, child support, and visitation.
